Syllabus
This training* acquaints participants with body-mind principles (somatics). This is an integrative movement course drawn from a variety of east/west techniques including: *Alexander, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Chi Kung, Dance, Feldenkrais, Tai Chi, Trager, and Yoga. These *techniques will help participants prevent injury, improve performance, boost energy, build stamina and confidence, increase flexibility, improve breathing, circulation and vocal production, and release stress.
*While the focus of this course is on the mental and physical aspects, it is important to acknowledge the elemental aspects of diet and the environment.
This academic and experiential course will serve participants with an overview of the increasingly popular field also referred to as “Somatics”, and is designed to help participants with an understanding of the mechanics of human motion for a wide range of activity. Increasing attention has been given to the body-mind connection through such works as “Healing and the Mind” and and other televised specials and studies in the fields of psychology, medicine, immunology and education.

Course REQUIREMENTS:

In order to obtain optimum results , students are asked to keep a journal with an entry after each class that:
1. Describes the days lesson.
2 Notes any physical effects.
3. Notes any emotional reactions.
4. Notes your personal observations.
Review the notes the following day and add any further observations.
An abridged [500 word minimum] paper based on the journals is required. [ It is due by email on the twenty-second class. The paper serves as a tool for the instructor to better understand your personal needs and progress. Include your understanding of the aforementioned techniques* [8 links] and the primary topics. The paper is graded for your effort, so submit it with your personal reactions and viewpoints. There are no right or wrong reactions to the exercises since everyone's may differ.

GRADING: Effort 70 points; Paper 30 points [Late paper -5 points]
Exceptional work; A 93 or more points, A- 90 to 92 points.
Above average work; B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86 B- 80 to 82
Average work; C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C-70 to 72
Passing work; D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66 D- 60 to 62
Failing; F 59 or less points
There are 3 excused absences, you do not have to show proof.
Each additional absence, with or without excuse, will lower your
grade by one step, e.g.: to A-, or B+ to B etc.
Points lost through tardiness:

ATTIRE: Any exercise clothing and shoes, bare feet acceptable.
*No tight jeans, skirts or street shoes.
